Hi all, First, I want to commend Lola for being THE leading source for listing directories that allow submissions. Over the last year, it has proved invaluable in helping me promote my sites, Now a little bit about PHP Link Directory: I started developing the script about 3 years ago. It started out as something that I used for my own sites and customers, but early this year I decided that it was good enough to go open source. The response so far has been wonderful, and there hundreds if not thousands of installations of this script running right now.
We have an active support forum where people are able to get help, discuss features, request mods, or release mods. The forum gets posts everyday, and it has been wonderful the way people have worked together to help.
We are currently on the 2.0 Version of the script. One of the big goals for 2.0 was to make it easy to customize the features and design. There many features that can be turned on and off including mod_rewrite, show pagerank of links, require reciprocal link, use sponsored links (paid thru paypal), RSS Feeds of categories and search results, and many others. With regard to design, we are now using the Smarty template system in version 2.0, which is probably the most widely used templating system available, meaning there are lots of programmers and designers that are familiar with Smarty, so that it is easy to get help.
One of the features that is fairly unique for PHP Link Directory and separated it from the rest of the pack early is the "Link Campaign" email system that is built. It allows the admin to setup an email template so that custom emails can be easily sent to other webmasters to request link exchanges. It is as simple as entering 3 fields (title, url and email of webmaster), and clicking submit. Once this is done, an email is sent requesting a link exchange. It is designed to be fast an easy, so that an employee or site owner can send many emails in a short period of time. Of course, it is recommended to do good research before sending emails, so that you are not bugging people that would not be interested in receiving your email.
We have continued to grow and improve. The most recent additions are the Editors Module, Symbolic Link Module, and Add Link First Email Module.
The Editor's Module allows the admin to grant limited access to only certain categories, so that unique editors can be assigned, making management of larger directories easier.
The Symbolic Link Module allows linking to another category from within the current category. For example, maybe within the Recreation/Baseball you want to add a symbolic link to Shopping/Sports/Baseball. This is a feature that is used on DMOZ, and I'm glad we have been able to add it to our script too.
The Add Link First Email Module is an expansion of the original link campaign module, which allows you to automate the process of emailing webmasters for link exchanges when you prefer to link to them first. Often better results occur when you say "I've already linked to you, so now can you link to me?" instead of "Let's exchange links. Tell me when you add a link, and I'll do likewise".
We have more coming still, and I hope you will take the time to try our script and participate in our community.
Thanks, Kunjikann.

Hey Kunjikkan, I would say, this is one of the Top3 Free Business Directory Scripts. I would not say who is 1 or 2 or 3, but yours is one of the best and top3. The o ther 2 I feel in the Top3 are the Biz Directory Sc ript and Links2.0 from Gossammer. Ratings 1/2/3 de pends on who wants what. But, great job. Post Comments |

Militar, Thanks. I'm leaving this morning for a few days to go help my grandfather, who just got out of the hospital, but I hope this fall I hope to be able to take the necessary steps to make it to #1. Post Comments |

The most widely used as far as the SEO Friendly Directory List goes is PHPLD.
Off th e top of my head the 4 most used scripts in my list are: PHPLD, SBD, Biz and SilkPHP. Post Comments |

I've just installed phpLD myself (this week). I agree that it has a lot of nice features. There are just 2 items that bother me a bit. The first is that I've done two posts (as FranceFan) on the support forum with relatively straight-forward questions and had no response. However, perhaps in a few more days.
The second (more serious) is that I apparently cannot specify the link text. PHPLD asks my site name and then generates extremely simple link text from this. I would really like to be able to specify the anchor text. As mine is a niche directory, anchor text can be very targeted and is quite important. Even if I seperately ask sites linking back to add anchor text, I'm not sure if this would cause the recip. link checker to fail, as the HTML code would then no longer match. Consequently, even though I really like a lot of the features in PHPLD, this one shortfall means that I will likely have to find another solution. Post Comments |

Tom, I have seen your questions but didn't answer as what I think are just speculations, anyway, the PHPLD forum is quite live, even when David is not around these days as much as he used to be, there are other users and programmers around. Give it few more days.
Anyway, my speculations (I use phpld alot, but no reciprocals management): I would be very surprised if it handled also anchor text. IMHO it only checks the link. Anyway, request it as a feature, consider making donation or consider asking some programmer on the forum to add that functionality for you, that could speed it up.
I will also attempt to answer it on the PHPLD forum, if nothing else so that the thread gets a bump at least.

There is always someone on the forums offering to help, and there are quite a few threads around what to do if things are not working.
I had luck with either manual install (there is a how to on phpld forums), or install in Internet Explorere instad of Firefox. Strange but worked for me.
Alternatively, feel free to pm me, I can probably help you if you will entrust me the necessary data (ftp login and password, myslq db name, user name and password).

Thanks Yamini, I may take you up on the offer as I really want to use this script. I will first try to search for the manual install "how to" thread. Post Comments |

Philip, Glad to hear that. I pointed it on the PHPLD forum but felt it was met rather with scepticism from programmers there. So it turns out I am not the only one Post Comments |

I was constantly running into a problem installing on one server. I was getting an error after installation: File missing libs/adodb/drivers/adodb-db_driver.inc.php. After checking on the forum, I saw I was not the only one with this problem, but I was unable to fix it until I used IE to install, not Firefox. Post Comments |

Sorry guys (and gals). Though we try to help everybody, I still learn a little everyday about my script. It seems the install requires IE. Hopefully, we can see why the install script doesn't work in firefox, and fix that.
I wanted to also report that most of the sites u sing the script are getting good pagerank on this latest google update, including on internal pages. Post Comments |
