Hi Andrez, Give me an idea of how much you would pay. One new product I'm working on right now is a Regional Directory. You can see a demo at www.phplinkdirectory.com/phpLD/ If you just need a few extra fields it can be done , but I would need to compensate the programmer. Post Comments |

Andrez, We are currently developing scripts which can be used as a niche directory and small business starter pack. It includes classifieds and a news section for articles. However its being developed on a shoe string budget and there is a still a lot of work that needs to be done. On the other hand its an open project and if anyone else wants to get involved they would be more than welcome. You can see a live site at www.tourguidesinthai.com Post Comments |

The idea is to take visitors into the guest book t o encourage both the service provider and custome rs to comment on the service offered. This page i s split in two and can display an image as well as various info fields including the url. The idea is give webmasters an incentive sort and organise listings and to then pool the content to feed a s eparate niche directory Post Comments |

I like that idea! I suggest having the Company Info listed before the reviews & ratings.

The biggest problem with listed content on the net is the fact that the user generally has to wade through irrelevant and outdated information before they get to the stuff they are looking for and the way we figure it, people will pay for personal advice from someone who is recognised as an expert in their field. But this raises the question how they get recognised and how they get their traffic?
What we have done is to pool records in a central database so that a restaurtant guide in any given area can import any of the records filed in the database to use in a populate a directory on their site. They then add to the database and assist with managing the content and if we keep feeding them with traffic they should have an incentive to keep the content clean.
At the other end of the pipe what we are gathering what is current content that is kept up to date and which is sourced from many different sites. And this now leaves us trying to figure out how to present this information to SEO friendly niche directories which will draw traffic not only to the webmasters sites but to the sites we have listed.
On the question of the guest books it probably would be better to have a link on the list page but at this stage we are deliberately trying to force users into the guest book so that they at least read them. I suspect that we will drop the guest book when we get to the stage of exporting this content to the Directories which need to be SEO friendly. Post Comments |

Ausef, How do you propose to remove the redundant/irrelev ant/outdated information? To me this is the biggest problem with the current way in which resource-style directories are run. They offer information, but how current is that information? DMOZ is talked about on every SEO forum on the planet, and is the first directory in most people's minds, but most of their categories contain dead links that go nowhere and sites that no longer fit the original description they were submitted under... Do you have measures in place to prevent your idea stagnating like DMOZ has? Post Comments |

This is the issue we started with and the idea is that you collect information from "editors" who are firstly running their own sites and secondly and most importantly sites from which they are earning an income. And an income which is dependant on the quality of the content they are providing. The theory is that we can keep the listings clean by giving the editor an incentive to specialise.
The next trick is to start feeding this content into an umbrella network that achieves two things. The first is to create search engine friendly back links and the other user friendly directories that people do use in their search for information on the net.
The way we are approaching this is from a bottom up perspective where you start by empowering and incentivising the person trying to start up a small net based business. Its been criticised as a nice idea on more than one occasion but its an exciting concept and i ts neat to see it rolling out and changing shape as we go along. Post Comments |

It definitely has potential, since you are clearly addressing what is the problem with current direc tories as searchable resources. If you need additional editors I'm interested. Post Comments |

if interested we have a open niche directory at www.outreach.co.za for anyone offering "We bskills". Its not quite finished but there is also a forum where we discuss the roll out. Its not a very busy forum. We get easily distracted and it takes discipline to makes these thin gs happen and we are not very good it. Post Comments |

Bechara, The project is live and we work on it in between all the other stuff we do. Without going into too much detail we are looking for ways to empower people and get them onto the net and a earning a living. For example I am training a couple of people in Bangkok to do directory submissions from specs I draft. English is their second language and they need exposure to develop their skills. Submissions are perfect for this purpose although they do need to be monitored closely. What I am hoping is that in time I can then sell their services to companies which do out source this work and if I am successful we will have put the first piece of the puzzle in place.
Next is the directory on Outreach. I want to make contact with established businesses that offer web design, hosting and development who might be in a market where they on sell the services offered by the companies using the services of the people we train. Its a network, a food chain we are trying to build to enable us to offer someone the opportunity to put in 160 hrs and earn $200 a month while they learn how to speak, read and write English off the web.
Next comes the directories and hopefully by that time we will have scripts that work and answers to all those questions we have not even thought about. Post Comments |
