What is the problem you're having? I've got Mandrake running on an older (circa 1997) l aptop and it runs fine, albeit a bit slowly. Post Comments |

Turn off "new hardware detection" at startup. I know that up to 9.2 it runs by default, and slows down the startup.
Run a window manager other than KDE. In fact, don't even install X -- that will probably give you the single biggest boost.
What many folks don't seem to realize about linux is that the statement "runs great, even on old hardware" refers to the operating system itself -- not the bells and whistles that come with it. Graphically-intensive programs require a lot of memory and CPU cycles to run; what you are seeing is that Mandrake is running quite happily in the background and KDE is what's killing the speed.
There may be initial program or kernel configuration differences between distributions that cause one to seem slower or faster (slackware probably has less running by default than mandrake), but with some fiddling around you should be able to level the performance between distros.

The X server as its called is what serves the graphical interface. Without it all you have is t he console. I say install it incase you do need it, but boot into run level 3 or lower. Post Comments |

Xfree86 is what serves your Windows Manager, such as KDE or gnome as examples. Personally I lean towards Enlightenment and Fluxbox myself, that is when I'm not in the console. I don't really use the gfx unless I'm at the box personally, and even then I can control the box remotely w/ gui.

Hi,
This thread has really gotten ot. to the original poster's question, many here have linux running well on their laptops. in my experience, i've used slackware and mandrake on my tp380ed. some minor adjustments had to be made, but that is to be expected when using linux. if you do install on the laptop, post up your experience and maybe someone here can help you out w/ any specific problems.
