Availability of TCP\IP gurantees order of packets

Author Name Status Posted Time Amrutha Vinay 3/31/2009 10:03:50 PM Author is Offline Hi all, Suppose I have a server that receives many clients, and each client sends large packets of data which must be broken by TCP\IP protocol into several small packets and the question is: I know that TCP\IP gurantees order of packets, but if several clients send big packets - is it guranteed that I'll get serveral packets of client 1 and then several packets of client 2 and so on, or the small packets can be mixed between clients ?? TCP is a simple stream, so when there are two streams, the data can be received in any groupings and interleavings. Sometimes you might get a large chunk of data from client 1 before you get anything from client 2. Sometimes you might get client 2 first. Sometimes the data might be mixed together. Note also that since TCP is a streaming protocol, there is no such thing (at the application level) of a "packet" or a "message". There is only a stream of bytes. The stream can be grouped in any size, irrespective of the size of the groups in which the data were sent. For example, if the client call send() with 100 byte, then 50 bytes and then 75 bytes, the server might get all 225 bytes in a single call to recv(), it might get 50 bytes in a first call to recv() followed by the remaining 175 bytes in a second call to recv(), or it might take 225 individual calls to recv() in order to receive all 225 bytes. Of course, the order in which the bytes are received is identical to the order in which they were sent, pursuant to the "guarantees" of TCP.   Post Comments Re: Thanks for the answers Amrutha Vinay 3/31/2009 10:28:36 PM Thanks for the answers Sabir! I already know that TCP can receive 3 different "send()" as one stream and that requires "Packetizing" when you receive the stream. The bigger problem that you're raising is that 2 different streams sent by 2 different clients can be mixed !! that's a big problem and it requires every stream send by client to have a uniqe identifier so "Packetizing" can handle it....WOW...that seems to be a big problem....is there a classic way to handle this situation ?? In TCP each client have their own connection (socket) which information are send and received on. Stuff from client A is received on socket A, and stuff from client B is received on socket B. What he meant is that if Client A sends a large message and Client B sends a smaller one is that Client A can receive half message (on socket A) first, then the small message from Client B (on socket B) and finally the rest for client A (on socket A). Another way to look at it is that Client A will receive your message in two buffers (so you have to append it yourself) and Client B will receive the whole message . I usually use a header for all my messages which contains: Version, MessageId and Length. Example message: 1;20;33;Hello world, My life is for real! 1 means that it's protocol version 1. Having version as the first entry is always a good idea since then it's possible to change everything else in newer versions. 20 is a message id, let's say that 20 means that the message body should be shown in a message box. 33 is t he length of the message body. It's used to continue parsing incoming bytes (no matter how many packes they come in) until all body bytes are received. Post Comments Re: Each different client will have its own socket Sabir. H. The data from client A will arrive on its own socket A and only on its own socket A, and on socket A there will not be any data from another client mixed in.
