As long as you're not doing anything crazy with it, it will be pretty tame. When it's i dle it takes up virtually no resources and as long as you manage your indexes correctly (e.g. H AVE indexes ) it shouldn't eat up too much CPU. Post Comments |

Well, the only website and book that I use are the Sybase-sponsored manuals at: http://manuals.sybase.com/onlinebooks/group-as/asg1200e
There are a couple 12.5 books which are currently slated to be released in like 4 or 5 months; the latest books I've seen in stores cover 11.5 or 11.9.2.
A couple useful links: http://www.mbay.net/~mpeppler/linux.html - ASE on Linux http://www.edbarlow.com/ - "The site for Sybsae Tools, Links, and Whatever" http://www.sypron.nl/ - "Sybase Tools and Documentation by Rob Verschoor"; this has "The Complete Sybase ASE Quick Reference Guide" for ASE 11.9.2 and 12 -- I own it and it's incredibly useful. http://www.isug.com/Sybase_FAQ/ASE/ - "The Sybase FAQ" http://freshmeat.net/projects/phpsybaseadmin/ - PHPSybaseAdmin (a port of PHPMyAdmin for MySQL)
The only two books I ever need to use are the Sybase books and Rob's Quick Reference manual (which I purchased and is incredibly useful.)

Also, if you're looking for help on newsgroups look at comp.databases.sybase. Also load a n ew server into your newsgroup viewer of "forums.sybase.com" and you can sign up to th e sybase.public.* newsgroups (ASE is 'sqlserver'). Post Comments |

thanks for the quick replies.
Can you provide some ISBN numbers for the books you have? Also, if you have any SQL only books too...

I get an e-mail each time and since I'm usually on my computer... "The Complete Sybase ASE Quick Reference Guide" is: ISBN 90-806117-1-9 You can buy it for 17.99Euro here: http://www.sypr on.nl/cgi/shop/shop.cgi For Sybase T-SQL your best bet is to use the online T-SQL user's guide at: http://manuals.sybase.com/onlinebook...eric__BookView I think you can purchase the books as a hard-copy if you want; although I think they're great online (especially with the ability to search) so I wouldn't buy them. For a hard-copy of advanced T-SQL (albeit MS SQL Server specific) I'd reccomend: "Inside Microsoft SQL Server 7.0" (Microsoft Press; Soukup & Delaney): ISBN 0-7356-0517-3 I'm sure Inside MS SQL 2000 would be great as well, although 7.0 T-SQL is closer to Sybase's T-SQL since SQL Server 2000 has a bunch of new things like OLAP and such. Two other general DB books that I like are: "Database Systems: A Practical Approach to Design, Implementation, and Management" (Connolly & Begg): ISBN: 0-201-34287-1 and "Database Systems: Design, Implementation, and Management" (Rob & Coronel): ISBN: 0-7600-1090-0 Post Comments |
