Common Use for PHP

Does it have any unusual features or special features other languages don't have? What are the strenghts and weaknesses? What other languages could be used for simi lar tasks php can do? I don't know much of php and i'm being persuaded to move from asp, jus t need a little help on deciding. Many thanks, Mauritus.
