Use of fonts
Fonts are important in printing and publication. The fonts used in a publication affect not only its appearance, but also its commercial printing cost. This is more essential for those who have already set a specific budget for a printing job. Fonts help your publication in many ways. What is important is to know some of the ways to work it out according to your idea.
The following tips are useful in choosing the right font for your publication:
1. Make short the size of your file before handoff. Enquire in your printing service whether they have any of the fonts that you use in your publication installed in their computer before you save your final publication.
2. If they have that particular font, you need not to embed the fonts they have when you save your files for your printing service. This reduces the size of your handoff files.
3. It is better to use true type of fonts although you have both TrueType fonts and PostScript fonts in your publication because of two reasons:
I. Microsoft Publisher can embed TrueType fonts in your publication, but not PostScript fonts or other non-TrueType fonts. If you would like to use non-TrueType fonts, you have to make sure your printer has those fonts, or you need to provide fonts along with your publication.
II. Your printing service can use all of Publisher's advanced features to prepare your publication for final printing if you use TrueType fonts.
4. Use only the fonts installed on your computer instead of formatting fonts with styles, such as Italic or Bold. That is, before you make text bold, check whether the bold version of that font is installed on your computer, and use it. After all it is better to use fonts instead of styles.
5. High-quality fonts provide additional information to printing devices, such as image setters. So choosing and using only high-quality fonts are more beneficial. This improves the appearance of text in your printed publication.
6. Limiting the number of fonts ensures faster printing and a cleaner publication. So use only a few fonts.
7. Unnecessary objects should be removed. Remove text and graphics from the scratch area before you save your files for your printing service. This enables for easier commercial printing service to work with your files.
8. The difference between paying over the required budget and paying less for quality work done depends upon the type of font you use.
